End of August Garden

It's the end of August and it is time to start making salsa. The tomatoes and peppers are coming faster than I can keep up with them now.

Jalapenos

The yellow sweet peppers are coming faster than I can get them canned.

Been noticing that the damn grasshoppers have been enjoying my garden too. Can you see the grasshopper hiding in this picture?

These are my pepperoncini plants.

And my New Mexico chili peppers.

The Romas are turning red now too.

Fresh salsa....here we come!!!

Crookneck squash and Buttercup squash.

Working With My Brother

I have been without a job now since October of last year. I wonder some days if I will ever have a job again and I feel frustrated and worthless sometimes.

That's why when my brother wanted me to come help him with his tree trimming business, I was all for it!! Not only would I get to spend some time with my brother, but I could help him in the process. Maybe I'm crazy, but I like to work.

My brother's rig.

Getting ready to fire up the chainsaw.

And up in the bucket he goes. I stayed on the ground, raked, rounded up limbs and we sent them through the chipper.

We were working at the Richmond City Park, just a block from my brother's house. This tree was dead and they wanted it taken totally out.

What a bloomin' mess! Now the fun part!

It was a hot, hot day and we were sweating buckets! Luckily we had lots to drink and took breaks to cool off. The pictures don't really tell the story of how hard the work is. But working with my brother is never boring!!

Processing the Garden Goods

Decided to mix my yellow wax beans with my green beans for pickling and canning. I shared my process and photos on the OssBank blog here.

Cucumbers are coming along and ready to eat and start canning.

Amazing how some things still grow in this hard, nasty, clay soil! But grow they do!

As soon as these Roma Tomatoes turn red, I will be trying to keep up with canning salsa!

Spaghetti squash is ready and I fixed one just the way I like!!

Learned today that I am growing an edible weed!!! These little succulents are abounding in the garden. This is common Purslane, also known as Verdolaga, Pigweed, Little Hogweed, or Pusley. This plant may be eaten as a leaf vegetable. It has a slightly sour and salty taste and is eaten throughout much of Europe, the middle east, Asia, and Mexico. The stems, leaves and flower buds are all edible. Purslane may be used fresh as a salad, stir-fried, or cooked as spinach is, and because of its mucilaginous quality it also is suitable for soups and stews.
More on Purslane.

In this picture it is coming up amongst the ivy.

And here it is by the squash plants. It is actually everywhere, I just didn't realize it was edible and I pull it when I weed and trash it.

From plant.....
....to can! These yummy sweet yellow peppers are excellent on sandwiches and in salads!

Another August Hike Up Logan Canyon

Many of the pictures I have already captured from hiking up the canyon. I will only put up anything that is new or different from this hike.

Water has gone down very noticeably and everything is really green and pretty.

Looks like the deer have been down getting a drink.

Such delicate flowers up here.

First time on this hike that I had to share the trail with the curious blackies!!

Shoshone - Bannock Indian Festival

My daughter and I were able to spend some time on Saturday, August 13, at the Shoshone-Bannock Festival in Fort Hall, Idaho .

Before the drum roll call, we wandered the concessions and admired the costumes.

Amazing creativity was to be seen everywhere!!!

We were able to capture only about four of the groups during the drum roll call. There were more than 30 sets of drums that sounded off during the roll call.

Grand entry begins.

Announcing the princesses.

Looking on.

On the way back home; catching a full moon rising.
